The All Progressives Congress, APC, flag bearer for Ibarapa Central/Ibarapa North Federal Constituency, Hon. Sarafa Olaoniye, has congratulated Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba on his appointment as the 14th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.

In a statement issued by his Media Aide, Taoreed Adeniran, on Thursday, Olaoniye described the appointment as a proud moment for the people of Igboora, Ibarapa land, and Oyo State, noting that it reflects excellence, hard work and dedication to service.

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan, at its meeting on July 22, 2026, named Prof. Olapegba, a Professor of Psychology and the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, as the 14th VC. He is expected to assume office on November 1, 2026, at the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale.

Olaoniye noted that Prof. Olapegba, an indigene of Igboora, rose through the ranks at Nigeria’s premier university to become a Professor of Social/Health Psychology in 2014. He obtained his B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D degrees from the same university.

“Professor Olapegba’s elevation is well deserved. His track record as an administrator and scholar gives us confidence that he will consolidate on the achievements of his predecessors and further elevate the premier university,” he said.

The APC flag bearer further expressed his readiness to work closely with the new Vice-Chancellor to advance the development of Ibarapa land and to deepen collaboration in the areas of academics and human capital development.

He added that the new leadership at UI would bring benefits not only to the people of Ibarapa but to Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

Olaoniye also expressed optimism that Prof. Olapegba’s tenure would strengthen town-gown relations, expand opportunities for youths in research, innovation and entrepreneurship, and position the University of Ibadan as a centre for practical solutions to societal problems.

He prayed for wisdom, good health and divine guidance for the incoming VC, and called on the university community to accord him the necessary support to succeed.
