The University of Ibadan has appointed Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as its 14th substantive Vice-Chancellor, ushering in a new chapter in the leadership of Nigeria’s premier university.
Before his appointment, Prof. Olapegba served as the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), a position in which he played a key role in academic and administrative governance.
Born on January 26, 1970, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Prof. Olapegba hails from Igbole Quarters, Igboora, in Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of Oyo State.
He began his educational journey at Anglican Church Primary School, Ilutitun, in present-day Ondo State, before completing his primary education at St. Paul’s African Primary School, Lanlate. He later attended Lanlate High School.
Prof. Olapegba pursued his university education at the University of Ibadan, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Psychology.
His academic career at the University of Ibadan began in 2000 when he was appointed as an Assistant Lecturer. Through dedication to teaching, research, and service, he steadily rose through the academic ranks and attained the rank of Professor in 2014.
Over the years, he has held several strategic positions within the university, including Dean of the Faculty of the Social Sciences, Director of Alumni Relations, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). His contributions have earned him recognition as an accomplished administrator and scholar.
A renowned psychologist, Prof. Olapegba has attracted several research grants and fellowships, authored three books, published more than 110 scholarly articles in reputable academic journals, and supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. He has also served on the editorial boards of respected academic publications.
Beyond the University of Ibadan, he is a Fellow of the Nigerian Psychological Association and has contributed significantly to higher education through membership of various university governing councils and professional bodies.
A devout Christian, Prof. Olapegba is happily married and blessed with children.
