Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, Honourable Power Minister-designate, has dismissed several media reports claiming that he promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months, describing the reports as inaccurate and a misrepresentation of his remarks during his Senate screening.
In a statement issued following the screening held on May 6, 2026, Tegbe’s aide clarified that he made no such commitment, stressing that timelines for reforms in the power sector are still being worked out and remain subject to diagnostics and stakeholder engagements.
According to the Aide, Adeola Adelabu, the Minister-designate only assured lawmakers that initial grid stabilisation efforts would commence within his first 100 days in office, while broader structural reforms involving sector credibility, gas supply, and metering may take about a year to achieve.

“My promise to this chamber and to Nigeria is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector,” Tegbe stated during the screening. He further pledged to stabilise the national grid, modernise infrastructure, strengthen commercial frameworks, and enforce accountability across the electricity value chain.
Speaking on tariff reforms, Tegbe assured that vulnerable households would be protected while efforts are made to balance sustainability, investor confidence, and overall efficiency within the power sector.
The statement also noted that the Minister-designate remains open to constructive media engagement and welcomes requests for clarification where necessary, acknowledging the media’s role as partners in nation-building and in promoting accurate public understanding of the proposed reforms in the electricity sector.
It added that Tegbe remains committed to disciplined execution, transparency, and measurable progress in addressing Nigeria’s longstanding power challenges.
