I was not happy, as a young Ibadan man, seeing how the politics of 2027 is gradually bringing a high level of disrespect to the stools of our traditional institutions here and there. Sadly, the elders who should be guiding the younger generation are, in some instances, the ones playing the unfortunate cards. I have deliberately put my political interests aside to deeply reflect on the consequences this unhealthy political atmosphere could have on our society. It is becoming increasingly unwelcoming.
But when will Governor Seyi Makinde learn to apply wisdom and restraint in his public presentation, with all due respect to His Excellency? Was the statement made in Eruwa not too much to have come publicly from the Governor? His Excellency should be excellent in his public speaking and presentation, particularly when his words have the potential to affect relationships with traditional institutions and the wider political landscape.
And, of course, can the Kabiyesi Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Sen.) Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa I, play his politics diplomatically and differently from the approach we are witnessing at present? No one is saying Kabiyesi should not have political interests, especially given his background as a former senator and governor. However, as the reigning Olubadan of Ibadanland, he needs to be cautious about his political moves and actions. He should be a father to all, rather than be perceived as being selective or particularly aligned with his long-time political son who is flying the APC gubernatorial ticket. The late Alaafin Adeyemi always had his own preferred gubernatorial candidate, and would not shut the door in any forms against others. He won’t even play the card open. That’s diplomacy. So, the institution of Olubadan of Ibadanland deserves its due respect.
As for the Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, we all understand the game very well. But he, too, needs to play it cool and balance his interests. He should not be seen as being obviously here and not there; he should be seen as being in the middle.
Governor Makinde’s reported role and support in his ascendancy journey should also be respected, even though”Ori lo’ye”. Whatever the political disagreements may be, the relationship between the Governor and the institution of the Alaafin deserves a level of mutual respect and diplomacy.
But where are the Soun of Ogbomoso, Aseyin of Iseyin, Okere of Saki and other prominent traditional rulers across Oyo State? Are they keeping their heads and hands away from the burning political sensation? Perhaps that is the best approach for now.
Traditional institutions are bigger than individual politicians and political parties, and even the occupiers. Their relevance lies in their ability to remain symbols of unity, wisdom and stability, especially during politically heated periods. Whatever happens in 2027 will eventually pass, but the institutions and relationships we preserve today will remain.
IGBORO TI DARU. Let wisdom prevail.
