The inclusion of women in political arrangements—whether through direct elections or consensus within political parties—is no longer negotiable; it is a moral and democratic imperative. It is crystal clear that women remain the backbone of political parties, playing critical roles in electioneering and intra-party activities. From grassroots mobilization to sustaining party structures, their contributions are undeniable. Yet, when it comes to actual representation in both the executive and legislative arms, women in Oyo State continue to be sidelined. This systemic exclusion is not just a disservice to women; it is a drain on the state’s leadership potential.
This raises a fundamental question: Are we to assume that women lack the capacity, competence, or capability to deliver effective leadership? The answer is a resounding no. In Oyo State, particularly within parties such as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), we are witnessing an unprecedented surge of highly qualified female aspirants entering the race. The issue is not a lack of talent but a lack of access and opportunity.
We must align our local politics with global standards. International protocols and the Beijing Platform for Action clearly require a 35% affirmative action threshold for women in leadership. Furthermore, we strongly advocate for the “Reserve a Seat” bill, which seeks to guarantee specific legislative seats for women to ensure that gender inclusion is backed by law, not just by the whims of party leaders.
As political activities gather momentum and candidates are being screened, there must be a deliberate and measurable effort to ensure women are not just “involved,” but “represented.” For the sake of equity and justice, we demand that women be given their fair share of elective positions across all levels. Oyo State has three senatorial districts: Oyo Central, Oyo South, and Oyo North. It is only fair and strategic that at least one of these senatorial tickets be conceded to a qualified woman. In the same vein, a minimum of five House of Representatives tickets should be reserved for female candidates.
The House of Assembly must also reflect this shift. We are requesting that at least 14 seats in the State House of Assembly be allocated to women to ensure meaningful representation in the legislative process. The era of political exclusion, subtle imperialism, and systemic marginalization must come to an end. Women must be empowered to amplify their voices and contribute to governance and national development.
We therefore call on all major political parties, including the APC and the PDP, under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, to take deliberate steps in ensuring fair inclusion.
Do not just use women as grassroots mobilizers; give them the tickets to lead. We are calling on all party stakeholders to consider the qualified female aspirants currently emerging across the state.
Women are ready to serve. Women are ready to deliver. The time to act is now.
