Beyond Paper Certificates: How BBYDI Used Blockchain to Give Young People Verifiable Digital Credentials

For many young Nigerians, completing a digital skills programme is an achievement worth celebrating. But for participants from underserved communities, another challenge often begins after the training ends: proving that the skills they acquired are real. Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI) confronted this challenge through its digital inclusion and emerging technology programmes, where young people have been equipped with practical digital, artificial intelligence and technology skills. Rather than allowing participants’ achievements to end with conventional paper or PDF certificates, BBYDI introduced blockchain-backed digital credentials to provide beneficiaries with verifiable records of their learning.

The initiative was built around a simple idea: young people should be able to own and carry trusted evidence of their skills wherever opportunity takes them.

Turning Certificates into Verifiable Credentials

Under the initiative, participants who successfully completed BBYDI’s selected digital and emerging-technology training received digital credentials with records anchored using blockchain technology.

Unlike a conventional certificate that requires an employer or institution to contact the issuing organisation for confirmation, the blockchain-backed approach created a tamper-resistant verification trail that could be independently checked.

This meant beneficiaries could retain portable evidence of their learning and share it when applying for jobs, internships, further training, fellowships or other opportunities.

The intervention was particularly relevant for young people acquiring skills through community-based and non-formal learning programmes. While such programmes can provide valuable practical knowledge, beneficiaries often struggle to demonstrate the authenticity of qualifications obtained outside established universities and professional institutions.

BBYDI sought to narrow that trust gap.

Blockchain Solving a Real Problem

For BBYDI, introducing blockchain was not about following a technology trend or promoting cryptocurrency. It was about applying the underlying technology to a problem the organisation had encountered through years of working with young people.

Traditional digital certificates can be altered, duplicated or become difficult to verify years after they are issued. Verification can also depend heavily on the continued availability of the organisation that issued the certificate.

Blockchain offered BBYDI an opportunity to rethink that relationship.

By creating a verifiable record associated with a learner’s achievement, the initiative shifted part of the control from the institution to the learner. Participants could hold evidence of what they had accomplished rather than relying entirely on BBYDI to validate their learning each time an opportunity arose.

From Digital Inclusion to Economic Opportunity

The initiative also represented an important evolution in BBYDI’s approach to digital inclusion.

The organisation has long maintained that meaningful digital inclusion must go beyond providing access to devices or teaching people how to use new technologies. Young people must also be able to translate newly acquired knowledge into education, employment and economic opportunities.

Verifiable credentials became one way of strengthening that bridge.

For a young person from an underserved community, the difference can be significant. A learner may not come from a well-known university, technology company or training institution, but a potential employer should still be able to verify the competencies and training that the learner has completed.

The blockchain credential initiative therefore addressed two inequalities simultaneously: access to emerging-technology skills and access to trusted proof of those skills.

Building Trust into the Future of Learning

The implementation has also provided BBYDI with practical lessons about how blockchain can be applied beyond financial transactions.

Instead of beginning with the technology and searching for a problem, BBYDI began with a challenge experienced by the young people it serves: the need for trusted, portable and independently verifiable evidence of learning.

That experience is informing the organisation’s broader exploration of blockchain applications across education, women’s economic inclusion and development accountability.

BBYDI believes the next stage of digital inclusion in Africa must consider not only whether underserved young people can access technology, but whether technology can help them build identities, credentials and records that strengthen their ability to participate in the economy.

For BBYDI, the lesson from the initiative is straightforward: a certificate should represent more than the end of a training programme. It should become an asset that a young person can carry into their next opportunity.

Their skills should travel with them — and their evidence should be trusted wherever they go.
