As Nigerians commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, Hon. Akinjide Kazeem Akinola (AKA), a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State and former aspirant for the House of Representatives, Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency, has reaffirmed his commitment to community development as a vital tool for sustaining and deepening democratic governance.

In a statement issued by his Media Assistant, Akintunde Yusuf, Akinola said democracy goes beyond periodic elections, noting that its true essence lies in improving the lives of the people through impactful policies, quality representation, and community-centred development initiatives.

He paid tribute to Nigeria’s heroes of democracy whose sacrifices, struggles, and unwavering commitment paved the way for the democratic system currently being enjoyed in the country. He particularly acknowledged the contributions of pro-democracy activists, civil society groups, political leaders, and countless citizens who stood firm in the quest for democratic rule and good governance.

According to Akinola, the best way to honour the sacrifices of these heroes is for leaders at all levels to remain committed to the welfare of the people and ensure that democratic dividends are felt in every community.

The APC chieftain noted that his various interventions across Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency are inspired by the belief that democracy must translate into tangible benefits for the people. He cited the ongoing “Light Up Ona-Ara” Initiative, which is delivering over 350 solar-powered streetlights to communities across Ona-Ara Local Government Area, as one of the practical ways of enhancing security, supporting economic activities, and improving the quality of life of residents.

He further stated that through the activities of the AKA Foundation, several community-focused programmes have been implemented to support vulnerable groups, empower residents, and contribute to grassroots development, stressing that sustainable democracy is strengthened when citizens experience meaningful improvements in their daily lives.

Akinola called on political leaders, elected representatives, and stakeholders to place greater emphasis on people-oriented projects and policies capable of addressing the socio-economic challenges confronting communities.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, we must remember that democracy flourishes when it delivers hope, opportunities, security, and development to the people. Community development remains one of the surest pathways to democratic sustainability and national progress,” he said.

He wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration while expressing optimism that the nation’s democratic journey would continue to yield greater prosperity, unity, and development for all.
