Oyo NOA Mourns as Ibadan Carnival Turns Tragic

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Oyo State Directorate, deeply mourns the tragic loss of lives resulting from the stampede at the children’s funfair carnival held at Basorun Islamic High School, Ibadan, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

This unfortunate event, reportedly organized by the foundation Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS), has left our hearts heavy with grief for the families affected.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Oyo State Government, the parents, and the relations of the victims. We also stand in solidarity with the injured, wishing them a speedy recovery during this deeply challenging time.

Feedback from residents of Ibadan has been unequivocal in calling for the prosecution of those responsible for this tragedy.

The Agency calls on the government to pay closer attention to regulating the activities of foundations and other organizations, ensuring strict compliance with safety and event management standards to prevent such occurrences in the future.

We commend the Oyo State Government for its swift response to the incident. The rapid deployment of a response team to the scene, the timely transportation of victims to hospitals, and the activation of all available medical support systems are testament to the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens.

The Agency also acknowledges the proactive measures taken by the state’s Commissioner for Health and other relevant authorities to provide assistance and ensure public safety.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Dr. Olukemi Afolayan, the State Director of NOA, Oyo accompanied by staff from the Ibadan North Local Government Office, visited the site for an on-the-spot assessment.

This underscores our commitment to understanding the situation firsthand and contributing to efforts aimed at preventing future tragedies.

The NOA reiterates the importance of proper planning and coordination for events involving children, elders, and other vulnerable groups. We urge event organizers, government agencies, and community leaders to prioritize safety above all else.
