The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched a comprehensive A–Z cybersecurity guide designed to empower telecommunications consumers across Nigeria to protect themselves from the growing threat of cyber-attacks.
This initiative is part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to promote responsible and secure internet use in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
The NCC noted that the rapid adoption of smartphones, computers, and internet-based services has increased users’ vulnerability to cyber risks such as hacking, online scams, malware, and identity theft. A single careless click can lead to serious security breaches, emphasizing the need for individual responsibility in the digital ecosystem. While regulators and service providers have roles to play, cybersecurity begins with individual vigilance and proactive measures.
To address these concerns, the NCC has prioritized cybersecurity in the telecommunications sector through various initiatives. These include public awareness campaigns, the development of regulatory frameworks, and the enforcement of minimum-security standards for service providers. The Commission also operates a dedicated Computer Security Incident Response Team, known as NCC-CSIRT, which works closely with industry stakeholders to protect consumers and safeguard Nigeria’s Critical Information Infrastructure.

The A–Z guide offers practical tips to help consumers reduce cyber risks. These include:
– Enabling two-factor authentication to add an extra layer of security
– Using strong, unique passwords and keeping them confidential
– Keeping software and antivirus tools updated to prevent exploitation of vulnerabilities
– Securing Wi-Fi networks to prevent unauthorized access
– Avoiding suspicious emails and links that may contain malware or phishing scams
– Protecting personal information from unauthorized disclosure
– Locking devices when not in use to prevent physical access
– Verifying sender identities to avoid falling victim to phishing scams
– Avoiding public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions to prevent data interception
– Promptly reporting suspected scams to relevant authorities
By following these guidelines, consumers can significantly reduce their exposure to cyber threats and enjoy a safer and more secure digital experience. The NCC’s efforts to promote cybersecurity awareness and education will help to create a more secure digital environment for all Nigerians.
