Oyo State traditional stakeholder, Mogaji Ejilola Sefiu Abiodun, has called for calm, structured and peaceful dialogue among political actors as conversations around power rotation ahead of 2027 continue to gather momentum.
Speaking on “Gbagede Ọrọ”, a current affairs programme anchored by Ridwan Oyelakin on YES FM, the Mogaji emphasized that discussions on governorship rotation should be framed around senatorial districts rather than emotional or divisive sentiments.
He noted that while power rotation is not enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it remains a political arrangement capable of promoting equity, fairness and long-term stability when properly managed.
According to him, “Power shifting should not generate tension. It should be discussed through peaceful dialogue, particularly within political parties. Rotation is not a constitutional provision, but political wisdom encourages balance.”

The Mogaji stressed that all three senatorial districts in Oyo State have equal constitutional rights to produce leadership, irrespective of their population size or political strength. He maintained that the essence of rotation is not agitation but inclusive consultation aimed at sustaining unity.
Citing Lagos State as an example of structured political balancing, he explained how leadership has rotated among its three senatorial districts — West, Central and East — as part of a deliberate stability-driven arrangement.

He referenced the emergence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu from Lagos West, Babatunde Fashola from Lagos Central, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu from Lagos East, describing it as a political structure rooted in fairness and equity.
While acknowledging that each state has its peculiarities, he urged political stakeholders in Oyo to approach power rotation with maturity, dialogue and strategic consultation rather than confrontation.
He concluded that peaceful negotiation within party structures remains the most sustainable path toward balanced representation and enduring political stability in Oyo State.
