The Council of Traditional Baales and Chiefs of Ibadanland (COTBI) has honoured Senator AbdulFatai Buhari with a prestigious award in recognition of his immense contributions to legislative democracy, good governance, and the general well-being of the people.
The honour, presented on Friday, January 31, 2025, conferred on the lawmaker the title of “Most Distinguished Friend of Ibadanland”, acknowledging his consistent support for justice, democratic values, and traditional institutions.
Speaking at the event, the President of COTBI, Aare Oladapo Wasiu Atilola, described Senator Buhari as a rare voice of courage in Nigeria’s legislative history. He recalled that Senator Buhari stood firmly against the impeachment of former Oyo State Governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, declaring the process illegal at a time when many lawmakers from Ibadan remained silent.
“He was the only one in the National Assembly who openly stood out to say the impeachment of Senator Rashidi Ladoja was illegal, despite having many representatives from Ibadan at the time,” Aare Atilola stated.
According to him, Senator Buhari’s loyalty to justice and truth did not waver, noting that the senator stood with “Baba Ladoja” during his tenure as governor and continues to stand with him today as the Olubadan of Ibadanland.
“He stood with Baba Ladoja then, and he is solidly standing with him now as the Olubadan of Ibadanland. That singular act of courage and loyalty is one of the major reasons we deemed him worthy of this honour,” he added.
The programme also served a dual purpose, marking the 100 days in office of His Imperial Majesty, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, as well as celebrating 96 years of existence of the Council of Traditional Baales and Chiefs of Ibadanland (COTBI) in community administration and grassroots governance.

Traditional rulers, community leaders, and invited guests at the event praised Senator Buhari’s commitment to democratic principles and his respect for Yoruba traditional institutions, describing him as a bridge between modern governance and cultural heritage.
The ceremony reaffirmed COTBI’s role in preserving Ibadan’s history while recognising individuals who have contributed significantly to justice, unity, and good governance in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
