The ARA Foundation is deeply concerned about the recent suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Nigerian Senate. Despite her courageous allegations of sexual harassment and misogyny against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the Senate has chosen to silence her with a six-month suspension.
“We strongly condemn this action as a blatant attempt to dismiss Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims without due process,” said Princess Aderonke Adedoja.
“The suspension is an affront to workplace safety, justice, fairness, and equity. It sends a disturbing message about the Senate’s attitude towards women’s rights and its commitment to protecting its members from harassment and intimidation.”
The ARA Foundation demands justice for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and calls on the Nigerian Senate to:
- Conduct an independent investigation into Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations of sexual harassment and misogyny.
- Reverse the suspension and allow Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to continue her important work in the Senate.
- Take concrete steps to address the culture of silence and intimidation that perpetuates harassment and misogyny in the Senate.
